The Difference Between A SSD And A HDD

Posted on March 6, 2016 By

The Difference Between A SSD And A HDDWhen the magnetic hard drive (HDD) arrived on the scene, we said good bye to the old ways of data storage, three and a quarter floppy discs and even the older 5.25. Computer users could finally store more data on the one permanent drive, but this was only the beginning because as people stored more data, they then had more to lose if something went wrong. Thus the solid state hard drive followed. If you want to get technical, a Solid State Drive (SSD) is a relative of the magnetic hard disk drive (HDD), but these two devices differ greatly.

The Old Magnetic HDD

The original old magnetic hard disk drives (HDD) were invented in the 1950s only held a small amount of data but took up a good square metre of space. Of course the average computer user could not afford these devices so the privilege was reserved for government agencies and large business. Who would want a big ugly box bigger than your fridge in your house? Regardless of the cost, these storage devices could save and retrieve data

How to Ensure the Durability of Fibre Optic Cables

Posted on March 3, 2016 By

How to Ensure the Durability of Fibre-Optic CablesThe advantages of fibre-optic cables are well known. They are more reliable and cost-efficient than their counterparts which use copper wire. They are more durable as well. Still, their durability will depend greatly on the environment which they are set in. That is why you have to ensure that they have the right properties for withstanding any harmful environmental impacts.

Strength

Fibre-optic cables which are stretched over a long distance have to have high strength and, more specifically, high pulling strength. This is because the pulling tension is considerable even if there are measures applied for its easing. The strength is measured in kilograms or pounds. It is up to you to determine your strength requirement based on the length of the cable and on the harshness of the environment where it will be installed.

Moisture Protection

If the fibre-optic cables are installed outdoors, they will certainly be exposed to moisture. In this case, models with loose tube construction are recommended. These cables have glass core and cladding plus a protective layer. The jacket which is moisture-resistant and typically

Finding a Better Mouse

Posted on February 21, 2016 By

Finding a Better MouseSeveral years ago, I found myself wanting a better mouse. My computer at the time was a Mac Pro provided by my employer, and the aluminum keyboard and Mighty Mouse that came with it were downright awful. The laptop-style, low profile keyboard was terrible to type on and the mouse had a tiny ball for scrolling, which would get gummed up very easily.

At first, I simply traded them in for a Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse set which I used for quite some time. It was a basic rubber dome keyboard and standard wireless optical mouse. They were okay. They worked. Ultimately, I wanted something better.

I noticed that my boss would try out other mice, but ultimately return to his old trackball. He explained that it was more ergonomic and he found it easier to use. Unfortunately, the model he used had long been discontinued and regularly sold for over $300 on eBay. Too rich for me. But I figured there must be some modern equivalents.

So I went on a search. My initial
